Even though the 1st OSSAA #OKPreps Gold Balls, as we know them today, for Basketball & Football was given out in the 1974-75 season, the 1st gold ball reference I could find in searching @OklahomanSports was March of 1984 by writer Mike Baldwin who references the "big gold ball".

The FORT GIBSON Lady Tigers play Friday night in the AREA Championship vs Grove at Skiatook. If they win, it will be the Lady Tiger's 20th State Tournament appearance BUT it will also be their 16th CONSECUTIVE appearance which is a #OKPreps record (for Boys or Girls)
