Sport shouldn’t mean amnesia, and the Olympic movement should help stop wars, not play into the hands of aggressors. Unfortunately, the decision of the International Olympic Committee to disqualify Ukrainian skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych says otherwise. This is certainly not about the principles of Olympism, which are founded on fairness and the support of peace.

I thank our athlete for his clear stance. His helmet, bearing the portraits of fallen Ukrainian athletes, is about honour and remembrance. It is a reminder to the whole world of what Russian aggression is and the cost of fighting for independence. And in this, no rule has been broken.

It is Russia that constantly violates Olympic principles, using the period of the Olympic Games to wage war. In 2008, it was the war against Georgia; in 2014 – the occupation of Crimea; in 2022 – the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. And now, in 2026, despite repeated calls for a ceasefire during the Winter Olympics, Russia shows complete disregard, increasing missile and drone strikes on our energy infrastructure and our people.

660 Ukrainian athletes and coaches have been killed by Russia since the full-scale invasion began. Hundreds of our athletes will never again be able to take part in the Olympic Games or any other international competitions. And yet, 13 Russians are currently in Italy competing at the Olympics. They compete under “neutral” flags at the Games, while in real life publicly supporting Russian aggression against Ukraine and the occupation of our territories. And they are the ones who deserve disqualification.

We are proud of Vladyslav and of what he did. Having courage is worth more than any medal.

Russia launched more than 2,000 attack drones, 1,200 guided aerial bombs, and 116 missiles of various types at our cities and villages in just this past week. Almost every day, they strike energy facilities, logistics infrastructure, and residential buildings. And this is happening even as diplomatic efforts for peace are ongoing.

The world must not turn a blind eye to Russian attacks. When there is no global response, the strikes become more frequent and increasingly brutal. This can be stopped through real support for Ukraine and our defense. We need missiles for air defense systems and weapons for our warriors, who hold back this aggression every single day. And for diplomacy to work, constant pressure on Russia is essential. The price of this war for them must be so high that the war becomes untenable for the Russian Federation. Thank you to everyone who is working with us to protect lives and bring a just peace closer.

There are already initial reports on the situation in the regions after the Russian strike. Kyiv and the region, Vinnytsia, Dnipro, Odesa, Zaporizhzhia, Poltava, Sumy, and other regions of ours. Repair crews, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, and all necessary forces are engaged everywhere.

The Russian strike involved a significant number of ballistic and cruise missiles. Plus more than 300 attack drones. Our air defense forces intercepted a significant number of targets. The day before this strike, we finally received the necessary missiles, which helped significantly. Every support package matters. Missiles for Patriots, NASAMS, and other air defense systems are critically needed. The direct task of our entire diplomatic system is to ensure that Ukraine has sufficient air defense capabilities. And partners must not fail to deliver on this – air defense missiles are real protection for human life.

In the format of a special energy coordination call, we will determine all the details regarding the consequences of the attack and the resources needed to restore electricity, heat, and water supply for people. The most difficult situation for now is in Kyiv, where a significant number of residential buildings are without heating. It is important that the world does not remain silent about this. Russia cannot be on an equal footing with other countries in the world as long as it is focused solely on killing and tormenting people. All Ukrainian officials – everyone responsible for the work of state institutions, regional and local authorities, and Ukrainian energy companies – must now be in Ukraine, working, helping people, and trying to stabilize the situation. Being in the country, in our cities, with our communities is essential. Glory to Ukraine!

I don’t know whether the news in your countries is truly covering what is happening to our energy system. I’m writing in the hope that maybe this way we will finally be heard.

Russia continues to attack Ukraine’s energy infrastructure every single day. These are not abstract strikes — they leave people without heat, electricity, and basic safety in freezing temperatures. Homes grow cold within hours. Families, children, elderly people are forced to survive, not live.

Maybe it is time for the truly harsh sanctions against Russia — the ones that were promised and talked about so much — to finally be enforced. Because words of concern do not stop missiles, and silence only gives the aggressor more time.

Vivian Motzfeldt has told senators about Greenlanders’ worst-case fears

Greenland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Vivian Motzfeldt, says it is crucial to explain to American lawmakers what Greenlanders are experiencing on a daily basis.

Motzfeldt is currently in Washington, D.C., where she has met with senators and members of Congress alongside Denmark’s Foreign Minister, Lars Løkke Rasmussen. She describes the meetings as productive, telling Sermitsiaq that they were aimed at strengthening Greenland’s position and giving voice to the people at home.

According to Motzfeldt, she emphasized the emotional strain, the pressure, and what she described as a constant worst-case scenario faced by Greenlanders, as well as their desire to return to a normal, secure daily life within the established framework of international law.

She added that it was important to underline that Greenland is home to a people who have lived there for thousands of years — and that, in the current situation, many struggle to see a clear future for their country.

Motzfeldt said she experienced significant understanding and support from the American lawmakers she met, noting a strong sense of empathy and willingness to listen.

There's an urgent and important issue. Due to Russian strikes and freezing temperatures, Kyiv hospitals have to use autonomous boiler houses to keep their patients warm and avoid a humanitarian catastrophe.

The situation is very serious and without supplies of alternative fuel from outside of Ukraine even the existing hospital boiler houses can stop working.

Russia intensifies its terror on Ukrainian energy infrastructure. Hospitals are treating more patients. It is critical for them to have electricity and heating.
