A good 3/4ths of the people talking crazy about Pan Africanism don’t even know what it is. & you can tell because the only person they tend to mention is Marcus Garvey.
Newsflash, he gave us ALL the UNIA Flag in 1920 … , the FIRST PA conference was held in London … in 1900.
@AbasiMalungu I’ve often worked in fields with employees from all over the world & both my Mother and Grandmother worked in Healthcare. I been around varying African ethnic groups since a kid. So I have primarily made it a habit to inquire about what country & ethnic group they’re from.
@AbasiMalungu Mind you, the argument was based on Africa/African being a colonial name. However some of the ethnic groups mentioned were also colonial names or that came about post colonization.
@AbasiMalungu A guy I was talking to mentioned the varying ethnic groups we stemmed from and how he was against simply using the term African. My reply was basically “I understand that … it’s also how we ended up dispersed around the world”. Like you said, it requires balance.
@AbasiMalungu I agree that there’s a balance to it. Cause I think the issue is that there’s often an “I’m better because I am xyz” that comes with some. Now if it’s simply a matter of saying “I am xyz … and this is what we do” I see that differently.
When people say silly things like The South lacked lyricists I know it’s because of what they were introduced to here is an example from 1996. Just because someone isn’t using every single literary device while rapping doesn’t mean they aren’t lyricists.

@Markaveli585 NY will always get respect for being the birthplace of Hip Hop. However, I’m old enough to remember OutKast being booed at the Source awards as well as ngz thinking that shit like Laffy Taffy defined the whole South.
@Markaveli585 I’m in a collective with artists from all over the U.S., and my right hand man is from Utica. I also know how anything past DC gets viewed … coupled with the artists who are from NY State but not from the boroughs.
@Markaveli585 I’m not saying both sides don’t, I’m just speaking as an emcee from Texas & sharing my perspective. Ironically tho, I don’t recall this sentiment being shared with the other comments … which kinda further highlights the point.
