IPI NIGERIA GETS A NEW PRESS FREEDOM HUB
The International Press Institute Nigeria has recorded a historic milestone in the defence of independent journalism practice in Nigeria with the inauguration of a new Press Freedom Hub in Abuja.
National President of IPI Nigeria, Musikilu Mojeed said the facility marks the first time since the 1970s that IPI Nigeria will operate from a permanent institutional base.
The new headquarters of IPI Nigeria will serve as the central hub for advocacy, dialogue and policy engagement, as well as a secure space for members to convene and advance press freedom initiatives.
Mojeed noted that the Press Freedom Hub underscores a renewed commitment to safeguarding journalists and promoting media independence across Nigeria and beyond, raising ongoing concerns about threats to press freedom in the country.
He recalled that in December 2025, IPI Nigeria listed three public officials in its “Book of Infamy” over alleged actions undermining press freedom at national and sub-national levels.
He announced the relaunch and escalation of IPI Nigeria’s campaign to hold those listed accountable, including the initiation of a global advocacy effort.
He emphasized that the move reflects the organisation’s resolve not to remain silent in the face of continued violations of press freedom.
The IPI Nigeria President called on government, civil society, media professionals and the international community to collaborate in building a free, safe and independent media environment.
The event forms part of activities marking World Press Freedom Day.
