If there’s any two lessons to be learnt from the saga of the man who duped people and diverted money to spend on a baddie who was flaunting birkin bags and luxury trips on social media, if there’s anything to be learned, it is simply this:

1. Don’t be eager to “God When” someone you don’t know the actual true source of their displayed wealth.

2. Don’t be quick to think of yourself as a failure and your life as a disaster because you are measuring yourself by the yardstick of someone else.

On social media, and in real life;
What you see is not always what you get. The people who look rich and flaunt wealth are not always honest, hardworking or decent people.

Many times, they are simply thieves, rogues, scoundrels and criminals who are utilising social media as an avenue to flaunt stolen money and oppress small-minded people who have low self esteem.

Find solace in knowing that everything you have, what you own and where you are has been the product of honest hard-work, decent living and virtuous livelihood.

There is dignity in labour.
There is honour in hard-work.
There is virtue in contentment.

This is not to encourage mediocrity or to say it’s okay to be satisfied with ordinariness, of course not.

This is simply to tell you that as long as you are working as hard as you can, doing all that you can, burning the night candle, toiling as much as is possible to make your tomorrow better than today, and to make your today better than your yesterday;

then my friend you should raise your head up high knowing that even though today may not be as great as you wish but tomorrow definitely will be better.

And on that basis, you should always remember that nobody can make you feel inferior- except you involuntarily give them the permission to do so (by always looking down on yourself simply because someone posted a beach photo from Maldives on their Snapchat). You have to do better than that and you must think of yourself better than that.

This is not to say everyone flaunting wealth online is a thief, or that you can’t admire (or even feel inspired) by anyone showing off material things online, that is absolutely fine.

But the moment an online picture of some expensive flowers sent to a girl somewhere is making you start to doubt your value and your self esteem; the moment a social media post of someone flaunting an expensive iPhone is making you rethink your own existence and making you feel inferior, that is where you should draw the line because you should know that you are now sabotaging yourself by using your own hands to destroy your self-worth.

Contentment is a virtue.
Self-worth is never bought.
You either have it- or you don’t.

Don’t run your race using someone else’s timetable. Don’t look down on yourself using someone else’s standard,

You may not own birkins yet, or may never be able to own one; you may not have a Rolex to flaunt yet, or you may never be able to own one;

you may not wear a van cleef yet, or you may never be able to own one; you may not drive a Mercedes yet, or maybe you will never be able to drive one;

But you must never let any of this vain things make you ever look down on yourself, see yourself as a disaster or view your life as a disappointment.

Be grateful for what you have.
Even if it seems to be little.

Be grateful for where you are.
Even if it looks like you still have a long way to go.

Be grateful for how far you’ve come.
Even if the journey so far has been rough and tough.

Because there’s no amount of money in the world that can ever buy self-worth and contentment.
