I have spoken to a few people about the blow I took to the head from the hoist, and this is what I've been toldย
Unpaid carers are being told to be careful, due to the risks involved with using the device
Other unpaid carers are being left to find out the risk for themselvesย
OTs are rewriting handling plans for carers around this hazard
OTs and physiotherapists are insisting it's a two-user device contrary to the IFU, in relation to the risk of being hit in the head. This results in patients having to hire two carers. Some patients, especially MND patients can't afford two carers and end up with no care at all. Even though having two people to do the job, doesn't eliminate the risk, as is necessaryย
Paid carers are being told,ย safety is the user's responsibility and not the manufacturers.ย ย They are constantly being reminded of this 'fact' in their training sessions!ย
This is far from acceptable
I have made the device safer to use myself by capping it with soft ends. But this isn't the answer. It means safety is no longer the manufacturer's responsibility as the device is being used outside the manufacturer's instructions for safe use!!! ๐ณ
Ultimately the safety of any medical device lies with the manufacturer. So if you have received any injury from a medical device, report it to the manufacturer and the Regulator. Then follow it up to see what they have done to eliminate the risk - as is required by law, in most countries

Patient is resting after being taken to unsafe 'respite'
No-one should face it alone, is what it says on the tin
Why does he feel he's facing it alone?
He hasn't seen a MNDA coordinator, or MND nurse
He needs a hoist to get out of bed , a wheelchair to get him to the shower , a proper toilet support etc etc
HE is frustrated
