South African woman faces feath penalty after drug smuggling arrest in Bali

A South African woman has been arrested in Bali, Indonesia, for allegedly attempting to smuggle nearly one kilogram of crystal methamphetamine into the country. Authorities say the 32-year-old woman arrived at Ngurah Rai International Airport on 13 July after traveling from Johannesburg via Singapore.

According to I Made Sinar Subawa of the local anti-narcotics agency, the drugs were concealed in her clothing. During interrogation, the woman reportedly confessed that she had been instructed to carry the meth from Johannesburg and deliver it to an individual in Bali.

Her arrest occurred on the same day as that of a Brazilian man who was found with over three kilograms of cocaine in his luggage. Officials say the two cases are unrelated, but both individuals now face severe consequences under Indonesia’s strict anti-drug laws, including the death penalty.

Indonesia has one of the harshest drug policies in the world, with dozens of foreign nationals currently on death row.

Authorities have not yet released the names of the suspects.
