To the east of Mali and located in the central Sahara was the kanem-bornu empire. At its height it controlled northeastern Nigeria, Eastern niger, western Chad, northern Cameron and southern libya. Once horse-borne nomads, the zaghawa built this culture. They created a state renowned for its longevity and political stability from the late eleventh century onwards, its rulers came from the same family, the SEFUWA. The empire's known history takes us from the ninth century of our era, well into the nineteenth century.
