MAIDUGURI–DAMBOA ROAD: THE TREACHEROUS CORRIDOR.

Before I begin, let me make it clear that nothing in this account is confidential or in violation of Operational Security. The reputation of the Maiduguri–Damboa road is well known to locals, traders, travelers, and anyone familiar with this treacherous corridor.

The Maiduguri–Damboa road is of immense economic importance to Borno State. Livestock, charcoal, firewood, beans, groundnuts, watermelons, and countless other goods move along this corridor into Maiduguri every day. In the opposite direction, traders transport supplies from Maiduguri to Damboa and onward to towns such as Chibok, Askira-Uba, Biu, Gonori, and several others.

However, sustained insurgent attacks turned the road into one of the most dangerous routes in the region. Many travelers abandoned it entirely, choosing longer and safer alternatives through Yobe State.

After major clearance operations, the road was reopened to commuters, but it wasn’t a free-for-all. Every vehicle moving between Maiduguri and Damboa had to join a military-escorted convoy.

Military deployments were established along the corridor to maintain a permanent presence, secure different sections of the route, support convoy operations, and reassure travelers that the road could once again be used for daily life and commerce.

All vehicles traveling from Maiduguri to Damboa on a daily basis were required to assemble into convoys at Molai, a village just outside Maiduguri. A popular local known as “Ci muci” was appointed to coordinate the civilians ahead of movement and assist with the convoy assembly process.

Trucks loaded with produce, commercial vehicles, private cars, traders, families, and travelers would begin gathering there, waiting to be searched before the day’s movement.

My formation, 192 Echo Company, was deployed at Delwa, beyond Molai, as a Forward Operating Base. Part of our task was to secure a section of the corridor and support convoy operations.

Every morning, we’d move back to Molai to link up with the convoy before movement. We served as the rear escort team. We’d also use that opportunity to scan known hotspots between Delwa and Molai before the movement commenced.

Other formations occupied key locations such as Kumala and Bulabulin, securing major threat areas along the route, while Damboa served as the final convergence point for the convoy system.

Vehicles arriving from Damboa were searched before continuing to Maiduguri. On days when our convoy from Maiduguri experienced delays, 25TF escort teams sometimes moved the Damboa convoy as far as Bulabulin, where we’d conduct convoy exchanges to ensure travelers from Damboa could continue their journey to Maiduguri before nightfall.

It’s important to understand the environment in which all of this took place.

By this time, most of the villages between Molai and Damboa had been sacked by Boko Haram.

Entire communities had disappeared.

On many stretches of the road, the only people you were likely to encounter were soldiers manning isolated positions, the occasional escapee from captivity, or someone whose presence raised more questions than answers.

That was the reality of the Maiduguri–Damboa corridor.

Ehn ehn….Now that I’ve given you the background, let’s talk about these pictures.

The first frame shows what would typically be the second half of a convoy movement. On some days, a convoy could consist of anywhere between 80 and 120 vehicles.

To avoid slowing down the movement, the heavy trucks were usually released first under escort by gun trucks and Armoured Personnel Carriers. The smaller vehicles would follow later and eventually catch up with the truck convoy.
If a truck broke down along the route, occupants could be evacuated into the smaller vehicles, ensuring nobody is left stranded on the road.

Some individuals and media are spreading misleading claims about the new tax reform laws taking effect from next year. Here are the facts they are not telling you.

From January 2026:

✍️ You will pay less or no tax if you are in the bottom 98% of income earners.
✍️ Food will cost less because VAT on food, education and healthcare will be removed.
✍️ Small companies will pay 0% corporate tax and will be exempt from VAT.
✍️ Large companies will pay lower corporate tax and will enjoy VAT credits on their costs.
✍️ In short: everyone - individuals, SMEs, and large companies - benefits from a reduced tax burden.

So you wonder why some say “this is not the right time for tax reform.” But why should we delay a reform that reduces the taxes Nigerians currently pay?

Here are some of the false claims circulating:

❌ New taxes are coming
❌ Government will debit your bank account
❌ Remittances and gifts will be taxed
❌ Online earners are the target
❌ Inflation will worsen

Good news doesn’t trend, sensational misinformation does, often to the benefit of the creator but at the expense of their followers. Unfortunately, many people fall victim.

I recently met someone who refused to buy rights issues from his bank because he believed he would be charged 30% Capital Gains Tax. In reality, he will be completely exempt – now he has lost money due to misinformation.

Nigeria’s tax awareness is low, and that makes people vulnerable to misleading analysis. The new laws did not introduce any new tax. Don’t let anyone scare you into believing otherwise.

When they say new taxes are coming, ask them to mention one. If they say taxes will go up, ask them which tax and for who.

For anyone who might find themselves in a similar situation, here is what to do:

1. Go to the bank where the money was wrongly sent and lodge a formal complaint. They will usually advise you to obtain a court order to substantiate your claim.

2. File your case at any High Court of your choice. The defendants (or respondents) will be the wrong beneficiary and the bank.

3. Ask the court to direct the bank (the 2nd respondent) to reverse the funds you mistakenly transferred into the wrong account. You can also include the correct account number to strengthen your case.

4. Once the court grants your request, take the certified court order back to the bank. Their legal team will verify and authenticate it, which may take up to a week.

5. Somebody asked ‘what if the person has spent the money?’. Even if it takes years, the wrong beneficiary has a debit balance already.

Corruption in Sports: A Reflection of Nigeria’s Deeper Malaise

While we continue to grapple with insecurity, poverty, and the rising unemployment among our youths, the most heartbreaking reality remains the entrenched corruption that permeates every facet of our nation - especially in the critical sectors that could help lift Nigeria in these challenging times.

FIFA’s recent revelation about the mismanagement of funds released to Nigeria’s Football Federation for stadium development and youth talent growth is both sickening and shameful. It perfectly mirrors the broader decay in how our scarce national resources are handled. I am certain that further investigations will reveal even worse realities than what we currently know.

I recall vividly that during my time as Governor of Anambra State, I received officials from the Sports Federation who visited and informed us that Awka had been selected as one of six geographical locations for the construction of a FIFA-standard stadium to be fully funded by FIFA. We immediately allocated land for that purpose, and they assured us that the project would be executed through the Federal Ministry of Sports. That was the last we heard of it.

Believing that such a major project was underway, we channelled our resources toward constructing mini-stadiums across the state to encourage grassroots sports. We commissioned the Chuba Ikpeazu Memorial Stadium in Onitsha, as well as the Godwin Achebe Stadium in Onitsha South, among others.
Years later, nothing came of the promised FIFA project, which prompted us to initiate the construction of the Awka Stadium ourselves. Seeing the recent news about funds released by FIFA to Nigeria to develop talent and improve youth sports, I am deeply disappointed by such blatant squandering of opportunities.

I have always maintained that those who accuse us of “demarketing” Nigeria for speaking the truth and exposing corruption are the very ones who thrive on corruption and deceit. The real demarketers of Nigeria are the incompetent leaders who have forged their way to wealth through the mismanagement and theft of public funds - resources that should have been used to provide schools, healthcare, and employment for our youths and to nurture their talents.

Since 2013, about $25 million has reportedly been received by the NFF from FIFA and CAF - funds meant for the development of football and youth sports in our country. Yet, there is little or nothing to show for it. The so-called $1.2 million stadium in Kebbi State is a national embarrassment. The structure in no way reflects the funds claimed to have been spent on it.

We cannot continue to watch our sports decline while corruption flourishes. Our youths are our most prized assets, yet we have destroyed their future and then turned around to label them “Yahoo boys,” when, in truth, the leaders who have robbed them of their future are the real “Yahoo” of our nation.

This is yet another shameful reflection of the corruption we have allowed to take root in Nigeria. If we truly desire to rebuild our country, we must begin with integrity and accountability in every aspect and sector. Until then, our nation will continue to crawl where it should be soaring.
