@nyeanee2 You can phrase it many different ways Stephen! Because after you show them the $3,000 and they get offended. What’s your next logically question?
The demand of the Anywaa community is that violent #SouthSudanese refugees be relocated to other parts of #Ethiopia and that the government secure the border. We are done dying and suffering at the hands of South Sudanese refugees while @UNHCREthiopia and the @RRSEthiopia silence us and cover up crimes against humanity committed by refugees in #Gambella. This burden is too heavy for Gambella to bear!

Dr. @OjotMiru’s response to @UNHCREthiopia’s One-Sided Statement!
@UNHCR Ethiopia dismissing host community complaints and deep-seated grievances as “misinformation,” and issuing warnings before conducting even a preliminary investigation, is unprofessional and deeply concerning. Such an approach is disrespectful to victims who lost their lives, to families still living in displacement, and risks further inflaming an already volatile situation.
Last weeks, refugees went on rampage attacking host communities and burning entire villages and towns such as Akado and Abol. Widely circulated footage on social media show refugees filming themselves while looting and burning host communities' villages in broad daylight. Videos show perpetrators acting openly and later returning to refugee camps with looted items, including vehicles and motorcycles belonging to Gambella woreda. This material remains publicly accessible unless one chose not to see.
At the time these violations occurred, there was no public response from @UNHCR Ethiopia, as always. However, when host communities now raised concerns and demandeding answers, UNHCR Ethiopia is responding by dismissing their claims and issuing warnings to silence them rather than engage with them.
This approach is unacceptable. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights affirms that all people are born equal in dignity and rights. Refugee status does not confer immunity from the law, just as host community status does not diminish the right to protection, justice, and dignity. The challenges facing host communities in Gambella are well documented by independent scholars, researchers, and policy institutions and cannot be responsibly ignored.
In this context, UNHCR Ethiopia should urgently:
1. Engage constructively with host communities and seek to understand their concerns through direct dialogue, and listen to grievances before dismissing them as misinformation.
2. Launch an independent and time-bound investigation by conducting a credible investigation into recent violence and alleged abuses, with transparent timelines and meaningful inclusion of host community perspectives.
3. Communicate findings and next steps openly and share investigation outcomes with affected communities and engage them on recommendations and measures to prevent recurrence.
UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency mandate is grounded in protection, impartiality, and accountability. Upholding these principles requires listening to all affected populations—refugees and host communities alike—and responding to credible allegations with seriousness, transparency, and respect.
