When I was in my 20s I wished to deepen my understanding of the Israel-Palestine situation. So I purchased at least a dozen books - mostly semi-obscure, academic, many by dissenting Israeli historians.

It is deeply disappointing that Edmonton Police Service Chief Warren Driechel went on a sponsored trip to Israel last month to visit with local police there.

This is a time when the government and military of Israel are accused of war crimes and genocide by the ICC and the ICJ. PM Netanyahu would be arrested on Canadian grounds were he ever to show up. Policing agencies in Israel have been accused of massive violations of international law during ongoing settlement expansion.

The visit is deeply painful and alarming to Edmonton’s diverse communities who have loved ones in the region currently devastated by the recent violence, not to mention ongoing illegal settlements in the West Bank.
