Unaware that their microphones were still on and that the live stream was still recording, it seems they were prepared to deliver a budget speech without knowing what the budget was in the first place.

The South African Budget Speech, scheduled for February 19, 2025, was postponed due to unresolved disagreements within the Government of National Unity (GNU), particularly over a proposed 2% increase in Value-Added Tax (VAT). This marked an unprecedented delay in the nation’s history, as it was the first time a budget speech was canceled on the day it was set to be delivered. The decision highlighted tensions within the coalition government, formed in 2024, which includes the African National Congress (ANC) and the Democratic Alliance (DA), among others.

Reports indicate that the DA opposed the VAT hike, arguing it would place an undue burden on South Africans already grappling with economic challenges. This opposition reportedly stalled the finalization of the budget, leading to an emergency Cabinet meeting that failed to resolve the issue in time for the scheduled 2:00 PM SAST presentation by Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana. The National Assembly Speaker, Thoko Didiza, announced the postponement, rescheduling the speech to March 12, 2025, though some sources suggest the date remains tentative pending further notice.

The South African government is failing South Africa and their corruption and theft of public funds is being placed firmly on citizens' shoulders with the proposed 2% VAT hike. South Africans are frustrated over the incompetence with broader calls to cut government waste.

South African politics is a joke.
