Biljana Plavšić occupies a singular and controversial place in the history of international criminal justice. She remains the only woman who served as a head of state or high\-ranking political leader to be prosecuted and convicted for crimes against humanity before an international tribunal. Her case before the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia marked a significant moment in the development of international law, not only because of her political status but because it challenged assumptions about gender, power, and responsibility in wartime violence.
