Friedrich Merz had called Marius Dick’s parents to give his condolences on their son’s random murder by an Afghan asylum seeker.

22-year-old Marius Dick was just about to start a Master’s Degree program in military history when he was stabbed in the heart by Sajad M.

If Odysseus had not angered Poseidon, his journey home from Troy would have taken only about a week instead of becoming a legendary 10-year ordeal.

Odysseus had already achieved the perfect escape after blinding Polyphemus, using the clever name “Nobody” to trick the other Cyclopes and avoid immediate revenge.

However, once he believed he was safely out of reach aboard his ship, his pride took over. Ignoring his crew’s desperate warnings, he shouted his true name back to the shore, revealing his identity and giving Polyphemus the information needed to call upon his father, Poseidon, to curse him. That one act of arrogance turned a short journey home into a decade of suffering.

Still, Poseidon was not responsible for every hardship Odysseus faced. He and his crew repeatedly created their own disasters. At one point, they were close enough to see the shores of Ithaca when suspicion and greed led the crew to open Aeolus’s bag of winds, sending them back to the beginning of their journey.

Their troubles continued with a year of willingly staying in luxury with Circe, the crew’s decision to slaughter Helios’s sacred cattle, which led Zeus to destroy their final ship, and Odysseus’s seven-year imprisonment with Calypso. In the end, the Odyssey is not just the story of a lost hero trying to return home — it is also the story of a man whose pride and choices repeatedly extended his own punishment.
