🌊One of the most promising areas for climate action has been largely overlooked and underinvested: the ocean.
Research commissioned by the @oceanpanel found that ocean-based climate solutions can deliver over a third of the annual emissions cuts needed in 2050 to limit temperature rise to 1.5 degrees C (2.7 degrees F), a globally agreed target to avert the worst outcomes from climate change.

Governments worldwide have committed to protect 30% of the ocean by 2030, yet only 10% is effectively conserved today. 🌎
Strong Marine Protected Areas are essential to closing that gap and building a #SustainableOceanEconomy for people and the planet. 🌊

The Embassy of the Republic of Kenya in Washington, D.C. was honored to host a high level reception ahead of the 11th Our Ocean Conference (OOC11), which Kenya will host in Mombasa from 16th –18th June, 2026 under the theme, “Our Ocean, Our Heritage, Our Future.”
The event brought together government officials, members of the diplomatic corp, development partners, private sector leaders, academia, environmental advocates, and friends of Kenya to mark a historic milestone: for the first time since its inception in 2014, the Our Ocean Conference will be held on the African soil.
Over the past decade, the Conference has generated more than 2,900 commitments and mobilized billions of dollars towards ocean conservation and sustainable blue economy initiatives. OOC11 presents a unique opportunity to elevate Africa's voice and showcase the continent's leadership, innovation, and partnerships in advancing marine conservation, sustainable fisheries, maritime security, ocean climate solutions, and blue economy development.
With over 200 commitments already submitted ahead of the Conference, momentum continues to build around Kenya's leadership and Africa's growing role in shaping the future of global ocean governance.
From Washington to Mombasa, the message is clear: Africa's ocean moment has arrived. The world is looking for leadership. The ocean is calling for action, and Kenya stands ready to answer that call.
