Sometimes you just need to start a kicker with a good old kickboard slap

[Ocean Saric @OceanSaric]

Me: What’s your backstroke count?

Kid: 6 7?

[Ocean Saric @OceanSaric]

6 7?

Psychologically, fear isn’t always bad — it’s protective. But in diving, the stress can overwhelm, triggering panic when you feel out of control (even of your own posture).

[Ocean Saric @OceanSaric]

Diving ISN'T scary because you're AFRAID of water.

Often it’s because your brain learned as a toddler to never tilt your body forward.

[Ocean Saric @OceanSaric]

We spend our toddler years learning to walk by keeping our center of mass above our hips to avoid falling. That deep-seated habit makes us afraid when you need to shift your weight forward. Rewiring that subconscious cue takes time, and that’s why many people fear diving..

[Ocean Saric @OceanSaric]

In older divers, panic and human error are the top causes of accidents (not water or gear) highlighting that fear often stems from mental, not physical, barriers.

[Ocean Saric @OceanSaric]

From infancy, humans instinctively avoid falling. Babies demonstrate this via the visual cliff experiment, refusing to crawl over apparent drop-offs, suggesting an early fear of moving their center of mass forward.

[Ocean Saric @OceanSaric]

People don’t drown because they can’t swim—they drown because they panic.

Panic hijacks the body: it wastes energy, cuts oxygen, and can pull even strong swimmers under in 20–60 seconds.

Do you agree panic is the real killer?
