I’ve never understood why “PAYCHECK fighter” is treated like an insult.
This is prizefighting. The whole point of prizefighting is to win prizes—and a prize is a PAYCHECK. Fighters compete for bigger opportunities, bigger fights, bigger contracts, and bigger PAYCHECKS. The goal is to earn as many PAYCHECKS as possible while chasing the biggest PAYCHECKS possible.

A fighter who stacks up PAYCHECKS has usually done something right. He stayed healthy enough, tough enough, skilled enough, entertaining enough, and professional enough to keep getting called back for another PAYCHECK.

How could that be a bad thing?

The guys people claim are “just there for a PAYCHECK”—the ones who do the bare minimum, avoid risk, look for an easy way out, or quit when the fight gets hard—usually do not last. They do not keep winning. They do not stack up long careers. Which means they do not receive many PAYCHECKS.

The only caveat in my definition is that a PAYCHECK fighter has reached the point where he knows he is probably no longer chasing a championship. Those title-contender days may be gone and over—but he still chooses to compete, take real fights, put it on the line, and entertain the fans.

So my definition of a PAYCHECK fighter is different. A PAYCHECK fighter is a man who keeps earning PAYCHECK after PAYCHECK because he keeps taking real fights, putting it on the line, entertaining the fans, and proving he belongs.

That is not a knock. That is respect. The ultimate PAYCHECK fighter is the fighter who has earned the most opportunities to receive a PAYCHECK—because he proved, over and over again, that he is worth paying.

Congratulations to @JimMiller_155 on earning the opportunity for more UFC PAYCHECKS than anyone else in history! If I’d known a UFC legend was going to read my original post, I would’ve given a better definition. I apologize for my stupidity. I hope this definition makes more sense.

Leben’s credibility as an official is not based only on his fighting resume. He completed formal referee training, spent years working California amateur and regional MMA, then became a professional referee and judge before receiving Nevada and UFC judging assignments. His experience as a fighter adds perspective but he has clearly put in the work to earn the role.

I would NEVER call Heather Hardy lazy! She’s a former world champion dealing with a brain injury, vision and balance issues after years of fighting and she has been training fighters to earn money.
