My condolences go to the Makumbe family after the passing on of Mr. Remigious Makumbe who suddenly passed on last night. I met Mr. Makumbe at our book launch in Johannesburg last Saturday, and he took the picture standing with him. I was sent a message below from him by Dr. Paul Mukoki after he had finished reading Footprints in the Chains: The Life Story of Job Sikhala

"Just finished reading Job's book this afternoon, and what a very painful journey."

I am deeply saddened by the passing of Mukoma Remigious Makumbe, whom I met just last night at Prof Arthur Mutambara’s book launch, having also met him recently at Job Sikhala’s book launch in Johannesburg.
He was an elder who always supported fellow Zimbabweans, often turning up in the company of his friend Dr Paul Mukoki, who has now informed me of this heartbreaking news.

Remigious Makumbe was a distinguished Chartered Engineer, Economist, and Transport Economist who dedicated his life to advancing infrastructure and regional integration in Southern Africa and across the continent.

With a career spanning over four decades, he worked with the National Railways of Zimbabwe, the SADC Transport Commission, and later the SADC Secretariat, where he spearheaded the SADC Regional Infrastructure Development Master Plan and played a pivotal role in shaping the continental Programme of Infrastructure Development in Africa (PIDA).

Beyond his work with SADC, he consulted widely for the African Union, UNECA, NEPAD, and other international institutions, and served on Zimbabwe’s Presidential Advisory Council.

He also mentored future leaders through the African Leadership Institute and was a respected facilitator at the African Institute for the Development of Infrastructure.
His passing is a great loss to Zimbabwe, the SADC region, and Africa as a whole, leaving behind a legacy of vision, service, and commitment to regional development.

I will miss the WhatsApp messages; May his soul rest in peace.
