🇯🇵 A historic Japanese temple hall that housed a sacred flame believed to have burned continuously for more than 1,200 years has been destroyed in a fire.

The blaze engulfed Reikado Hall at the Daisho-in Temple complex near Mount Misen in Hiroshima Prefecture. The “eternal flame,” known as Kiezu no Hi, is said to have been lit by Buddhist monk Kukai over a millennium ago.

Despite the destruction of the building, temple officials confirmed the sacred flame itself was successfully saved and moved to another location.
