Today we had an amazing public participation in Nanyuki to incorporate the voice of the community in our upcoming wellness initiative. As we continue to create mental health awareness month, this May, we have taken wellness anotch higher, involve the community, because they matter
Grounded in Article 10 (2)(a) of the Constitution 2010, public participation remains a cornerstone of inclusive governance and sustainable development.
Today, we convened a community public participation forum in Naibor Ward, Segera Location, on the proposed Wellness Sanctuary Project, an initiative aimed at creating a restorative and safe space for civic actors, human rights defenders, and communities to prioritise mental well being and healing from the pressures of civic engagement.
The heavy rains and flooding experienced across Nairobi have brought significant human, social, and economic hardship. Many citizens are grappling with the loss of loved ones, displacement, disrupted livelihoods, and emotional distress caused by the crisis. At Inuka Kenya Ni Sisi!, we recognize the profound emotional and psychological toll that disasters such as flooding can have on individuals and communities.
During moments of crisis, safety is not only physical but also emotional. Disasters often trigger the body’s natural stress response as it tries to protect itself from danger and uncertainty. Understanding how our minds and bodies react to stress can help citizens approach recovery with compassion and patience.
When people experience flooding, loss, or displacement, the body may activate what is commonly known as the fight, flight, or freeze response. This biological reaction releases stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol to prepare the body to respond to danger. As a result, some people may feel fatigue, headaches, difficulty sleeping, anxiety, irritability, or trouble concentrating. Others may feel emotionally numb, overwhelmed, or constantly alert.
These reactions are normal responses to abnormal and stressful situations. Recognizing this is important because it helps reduce self-judgment and encourages emotional healing.
In such challenging times, small but meaningful actions can support recovery. Taking time to rest, practice slow breathing, stay connected with others, and seek support when needed can help regulate the body and restore emotional balance during and after the crisis.

I am happy to be a part of this transformative process where we not only empower men to be advocates for eliminating gender based violence within their communities, but to also embrace positive masculinity and openly talk about challenges they have experienced in addressing GBV
KHRC and the @UhaiWetu held a forum in Dandora, Nairobi, to empower young men to help fight gender-based violence.
Participants raised concerns about the presence of women-only officers at gender desks in police stations, saying this makes it harder for men to seek help. They recommended that the desks have both men and women officers.
The men also felt that their cases were often overlooked.
The forum is part of the #PLEADYetu, which the @EUinKenya, through @UNDPKenya, supports to make GBV support more inclusive.
KHRC remains committed to seeking justice for all GBV victims.

📣It's time to break the silence and take a stand! 📣
Today marks the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a global campaign to end violence against women and girls.
In Kenya, we face a sobering reality: rising cases of gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide continue to rob countless women and girls of their safety, dignity, and lives. These injustices demand urgent action.Ending violence against women and girls requires a collective effort from all sectors of society.
Stay tuned as we roll out activities and campaigns throughout this period to champion a safer, more equitable Kenya. ✊✊
