The desire for self-worship and idolatry was activated in man after the fall. The unregenerated is idolatrous by nature. That’s why we worship things, money, men and anything that tickles our imagination. The new birth ought to realign man to true worship.

You cannot have faith for new things if you keep calling to mind the failures and the limitations of the past. God will be unable to do new things in your life, if the images in your heart contradicts his word.Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old.
