Yesterday, Dr. Kizza Besigye collapsed in court.

Think about that for a moment.

A 70-year-old man who has spent more than a year in detention collapsed before the very system that is keeping him behind bars.

He was carried away in an ambulance, and the world watched.

And I keep asking myself:

What exactly are we waiting for?

Are we waiting for Besigye to die?

Are we waiting for his coffin to be brought out of prison?

Are we waiting for African presidents to suddenly discover that he was a hero?

Are we waiting for foreign dignitaries to fly into Kampala, stand beside his body and deliver beautiful speeches about democracy?

Because that is what Africa has become painfully good at.

We mourn the dead with extraordinary courage while abandoning the living with extraordinary silence.

Where are the African leaders?

Where are the opposition parties?

Where are the human-rights organisations?

Where are the churches?

Where are the lawyers?

Where are the people who claim to believe in democracy?

Where are the people who will tweet #RIPBesigye after his death but cannot tweet #FreeBesigye while he is alive?

Dr. Besigye has spent years challenging power through politics.

He has contested elections, endured arrests and persecution, and remained one of Uganda's most prominent opposition figures.

Then came Nairobi.

He disappeared in Kenya in November 2024 and was subsequently produced in Uganda, where he was charged and detained.

His lawyers and supporters have consistently challenged the circumstances of his removal and detention.

Now his health is deteriorating.

And yesterday, his body itself sounded the alarm.

How many more alarms do we need?

How many more hospital visits?

How many more court appearances?

How many more rejected bail applications?

How much more suffering before Africa decides that a human life is more important than political power?

Let us stop waiting for the funeral.

Speak now.

Speak while Besigye can still hear you.

Speak while his family can still hold him.

Speak while his lawyers can still fight for him.

Speak while there is still a living man behind that prison wall.

Because one day, if Besigye dies in detention, there will be no shortage of people lining up to call him a freedom fighter.

They will write books about his courage.

They will name streets after him.

They will give speeches about his sacrifice.

They will tell us how much they admired him.

But Besigye does not need our admiration from a podium after death.

He needs our courage today.

Africa, this is not the time to be polite.

This is not the time to look away.

This is not the time to wait for permission to speak.

A political prisoner is not a political inconvenience. He is a human being.

And if we cannot speak when a man is suffering in detention, then our speeches about democracy, freedom and human rights are nothing more than noise.

Speak for Kizza Besigye.
Speak loudly.
Speak now.

Before history asks us the question we will never be able to answer:

“You knew he was suffering. Why did you remain silent?”

I sent 50k using swift almost a month ago through @Coopbankenya on 30th June to the United States.

They charged me almost 5k to transfer the cash... Had I known it would have been this exorbitant I wouldn't have done it. Regardless, it's now been almost a month. The funds never reached the recipient. It has just been a month of being taken round in circles. Endless trips to the bank. Have been fruitless..

I was even told to pay a further 600 to reverse the money (comical, since it's the same guys who couldn't send the money to the destination telling me to pay them to reverse it) I am calling on @CBKKenya to help me in this matter. Kenyans shouldn't begrudge Sen Sifuna for his meteoric political rise. We should instead celebrate it. It's always a good thing when a young man gets a break in politics or any career for that matter and thrust himself into the national limelight. Remember, Sifuna hasn't elbowed anyone. He simply claimed a space that was empty since Hon. Kijana Wamalwa died two decades ago. For too long, Western was bereft of a political heavyweight that sat at the national table as of right. Sifuna seems to be the new kid on the block. And to be fair to the young man, his appeal goes beyond Luhya land.
