In the early 20th century the building was gifted to the DAR who have preserved it ever since. It has been carefully restored and in 1973 was given National Landmark status. You can tour the building and see the foundations of the 1698 Half Moon Battery in the basement.

It was here in 1773 that a large crowd gathered to protest the tea tax. It was also here that the Declaration of Independence was read for the first time in the colony. During the British occupation of Charleston 1780-2 it was used as a barracks and provost dungeon.

The Exchange at the end of Broad Street in Charleston South Carolina was designed by William Rigby Naylor in 1766 and built between 1767-71 by Peter and John Adam Horlbeck. Known as the Exchange and Customs House it was considered one of the finest public buildings in America.
