I'm a middle-aged woman and I'm afraid to offer help to other women. You just can't predict the outcome with enough surety. I took the risk with a 70 year old woman in Trader Joes a few weeks ago. She was using her cane to try to claw something off a shelf she couldn't reach. Initially I rushed to help her and then I slowed up to assess a bit more before committing to offer help but bracing for a possible rude response. She was lovely and we had a nice chat but it's like social Russian Roulette.
