Opinion: Real peacebuilding requires leaving the comfort of elite conferences and engaging directly with the difficult realities on the ground.

A horrific story from Gaza.
Hamas militias are threatening Palestinian activist Nawal Ferwana over her Facebook posts criticizing them. Their message: "Come to us, or we will drag you by your hair in front of everyone."
Nawal has been living in a tent for two years. Her only "crime" was speaking her mind and posting on Facebook.
This is Hamas: a terrorist militia that hunts down a displaced woman living in a tent for daring to express her views and say what many others are too afraid to say.
Stand with the people of Gaza, not with the militias that oppress, intimidate, and silence them.

Israel should pay close attention to what these elections revealed. There is a real Palestinian constituency for stability, governance, reform, and political engagement. It is not hypothetical. It already exists. Ignoring that reality risks reinforcing precisely the dynamics Israel says it wants to avoid.
The same lesson applies to the United States and international donors. Investment in Palestinian institutional renewal is far more effective before collapse than after it. Calls for Palestinian presidential and legislative elections should therefore be accompanied by real political pressure, conditions, and incentives that make continued paralysis increasingly difficult to sustain.
The April local elections—and the peaceful transfer of authority in Deir al-Balah—did not solve the Palestinian political crisis. But they did reveal something important: institutional politics still retains credibility among large parts of Palestinian society, even after years of fragmentation, stagnation, and distrust. The direction of public sentiment is becoming harder to ignore.
The question now is whether the Palestinian leadership is capable of adapting to it—or whether change will eventually be forced from below.
I hate to be the guy to pour cold water on the reports of IDF troops reaching the Beaufort Ridge in Lebanon, but I struggle to understand why this is being celebrated.
For anyone who lived here in the 1990s, the Beaufort is not a symbol of success. It represents Israel's long and costly presence in Lebanon - something that claimed too many soldiers' lives and ended without Israel achieving its strategic goals.
The fact that the IDF can reach the Beaufort today is obvious and - despite the media festival - is not even close to a victory. The real questions are different: How does Israel eventually leave? What is the political endgame? And are we possibly witnessing the beginning of another prolonged military presence in Lebanon without a clear horizon for how it ends?
Because here is what we already know way too well - getting into Lebanon is always easier than getting out.
