Ehhhh, I wouldn’t say it’s a textbook box out. At the very start of this clip Jose steps forward into Wemby’s path, and lowers his shoulder to deliver contact. The reason Wemby is upset is bc he’s running toward the basket, and Jose moves into his path at the last second. A textbook box out (rebounding position) is legally placing your body between the opponent and the basket, and blocking their path. IMO, Jose didn’t do that legally. While I love his tenacity, he has a reputation of being a disruptor. His only goal here is to make a physical play on Wemby. He’s not boxing out for a rebound.
This play was correctly officiated. When we referee the defense, we see Shamet jumps vertically (straight up) to contest Castle’s driving shot attempt, keeps his left arm collapsed to his body, and when he swipes down to block the shot, he makes contact that dislodges the ball prior to contact to Castle’s wrist. Excellent patience from the refs to process this play, and determine that Shamet did not make illegal contact.
On this play, I would’ve preferred a LBF be called on Alvarado for moving into the straight line path of a rapidly progressing Wemby, without giving Wemby the opportunity to avoid contact. Then after a LBF called on Alvarado, I’d prefer a Technical Foul be called on Wemby for unnecessary dead ball contact.
@clockindubz@PaulGelb I’d be more worried about whether or not your prayers will actually be heard, than I would about my mental health. I’m doing just fine, btw. I hope you are too.

@BadSportsRefs Thank you for providing an example of the refs correctly not calling this a double dribble, while sharing that quote from Silver. Much appreciated. 🙌
Based on what I’m seeing, it would not surprise me if the Knicks swept! GM3 back in MSG is going to be a tough one. I have to believe the Knicks will take it in front of their home fans though. It’s going to be electric in MSG. Spurs will have to bring their A+ game to steal one there.
Congrats to your Knicks! Incredible game, and an incredible run they are on!!!! I’m happy for them.
I genuinely watched the game in the most objective and unbiased way one can possibly watch it, and I can honestly say the refs didn’t favor the Spurs all game.
Just root for your team, and enjoy it. Constantly complaining about refs steals some of your joy, and unnecessarily raises your blood pressure.😁
Thanks, Ishan!
Exactly, and it wasn’t even technically a “dribble”. That singular batting of the loose ball after the defensive deflection was a bat to regain control, not a controlled dribble. By rule, and in line with precedent, this was not a double dribble, and was correctly officiated.
@bballfan233 Ok, I watched it again. Castle veers off his path and into Bridges to seek out contact, and then quick pulls to try to draw the foul. We’ve seen Brunson do that a couple times tonight and not be rewarded for it, so I like the consistency.
@bballfan233 I have to go back and watch that one when I get a sec, bc I initially thought Castle kinda kicked out his leg unnaturally to seek out contact. Maybe some illegal contact up top though? I’ll let you know when I check it out again.
I will not admit that, Axel. While I think there are a few more incorrect ref decisions that have disadvantaged the Knicks than the Spurs, to say this game has been called one way the whole time would be disingenuous. It hasn’t been. I’m saying this as someone who does not care who wins.
Also, despite what fans may think, the refs genuinely do not care who wins either. These ref conspiracy theories are flat out false, have gotten out of control, and do more damage than the refs could.
@JmPearson1975@bballfan233 We’re not power hungry either, Coach. I’m just trying to educate fans on the rules of the game. I’m literally just trying to help, but whenever you start comparing resumes, or saying things like “I’ve forgotten more ball than you’ll ever know”, you’ve already lost.
@ZebesMoon@PaulGelb I didn’t like that foul call on KAT right there btw. I thought Castle should’ve been called for a foul on KAT, instead of the other way around.
@ZebesMoon@PaulGelb Haha. Yeah, I genuinely don’t think the Knicks are getting screwed by the refs. It’s been a well officiated game for the most part.
At this point, I’m not even responding for you. It’s for others who may read this, are able to process exactly what happened, and are interested in learning the rule for why this is a legal play. You’re never going to change your mind. I don’t expect you too, but it doesn’t change why this was not a double dribble, no matter how many games you’ve played or coached. Most refs have played the game. I am no different, but that is irrelevant in a rules debate. You did not know this rule, and I did. Now give me that nickel. 😉
Yeah, I don’t see that happening. Not that this is a good gauge of whether a game is called fairly or not, but the fouls and FT’s are pretty much even. I know some of that is due to “hack-a-Mitch”, but I personally haven’t seen the whistle favor one team over another, and I genuinely don’t care who wins.
