It may surprise you to know that the reason millions of people are going through hardship is not always self-inflicted. In many cases, it is caused by a few men in positions of power.

There is a place in Premier Layout, Enugu State, that has not had electricity for the past one month. The residents had contributed approximately ₦13 million for a so-called "New Transformer." However, the individuals in charge of the project introduced something entirely different, and till now, that community still has no light. A large portion of the residents are married people with children. Fuel now costs ₦1,350.

The community has an EEDC personnel who engineered the purchase of this so-called "new transformer." As soon as the community’s transformer was removed, she used her influence to connect herself to another transformer and later left the community’s group chat.

On Friday, 15th of May, 2026, a group of community members went to the EEDC head office. After much resistance, they insisted on seeing the Chief Technical Officer, Mr. Chimeze Chukwu, who confirmed he was unaware of any transformer being removed from the community. Cutting the long story short, he then promised to deploy a 500KVA transformer to the community the following Friday.

My point in this story is that the EEDC personnel in the community knew exactly what she was doing. The community has demanded accountability, which neither she nor the chairman is willing to provide. The chairman of the community has since announced his resignation in a bid to deny responsibility.

This is a clear indication that, as a people, we can be unfair to one another. We often do not wish ourselves well, not realizing that we need each other to collectively build our success stories.

What joy do people derive from seeing their own kind suffer so much?

The children in that community, what wrong did they do to deserve having their joy and potential stifled in such an unbearable economy? This is pure wickedness.

Until we come together to reject wickedness towards one another, even in the smallest units of society, such as the family, communities, etc, we cannot truly expect to have leaders who will turn things around for the good of the people they govern.
