E.g of anti-angiogenesis drugs for advanced bowel cancer include Aflibercept (Zaltrap) #dawchat

Anti angiogenesis drugs –
Angiogenesis means the growth of new blood vessels. A cancer needs a good blood supply to bring food and oxygen and remove waste products. These group of drugs stop the blood supply to cancer cells. #dawchat

Examples of monoclonal antibodies include cetuximab (Erbitux) and bevacizumab (Avastin) #dawchat

Another mechanism of action is that they block the trigger mechanism that causes cancer cells to divide and grow #dawchat

Monoclonal antibiodies:
These work by recognising and finding specific proteins on cancer cells.
-Different types of cancer have different proteins. The monoconal antibody stops particular proteins from binding to cancer cells #dawchat

The choice of a biological therapy depends on the type of cancer, its stage and other treatments that may have been had.
Biological therapies for bowel cancer include: #dawchat

They can shrink the cancer or slow its growth but they have not been proven to cure the cancer #dawchat

Biological therapies :
These help the body to control the growth of cancer cells and encourage the body’s immune system to kill cancer cells
They control the growth of cancer cells that may have spread to other parts of the body (advanced or metastatic bowel cancer) #dawchat

Side effect profile is similar to chemotherapy #dawchat

External radiotherapy doesn't make you radioactive, as the radiation passes through your body but
radiation from implants or injections can stay in your body for a few days, it is advised to avoid close contact with other people for a few days after treatment #dawchat

Radioisotope therapy- radioactive liquid is either swallowed or injected into your blood #dawchat

Types of radiotherapy treatments include:
-External radiotherapy–a machine is used to carefully aim beams of radiation at the cancer.
-Brachytherapy – radioactive metal implants are temporarily placed inside your body near the cancer #dawchat
