What else could explain sucidal, intentional acts like throwing oneself into a raging ocean, driving at full speed on the overtaking lane in the wrong direction, and crossing roads without looking both ways?

It's almost like every evasive, defensive action we take is a reflex action, and does not involve the brain at all.
