Why the HA-HA-HA-HA in Hooligan? Was it necessary?
In Hooligan, BTS voluntarily sheds their hyper-polished, strictly managed idol images to embrace this raw, wild state. BTS re-frames the word as an essential act of liberation. The frantic, manic laughter 'Ha-ha-ha-ha' combined with industrial grinding noises and a heavy bassline functions as a psychological trigger that shatters social structures.
The Laughter as the 'Jester’s Rebellion' Against Structure: In sociology & literature, polite laughter is used to maintain social order and show respect. Manic, unhinged laughter does the exact opposite: it signals that the rules no longer apply.
The Death of Fear: By laughing frantically in the middle of a heavy track, BTS signals that they are completely detached from the pressures, critiques, and expectations of the music industry. It is the laugh of the 'Jester'—the only character in a royal court who could mock the king without being executed.
Nietzsche argued that when the wall of rationality breaks down, individuals experience a terrifying yet ecstatic return to 'Primal Unity' : a state where you forget your individual identity and merge with the collective chaos (the stadiums BTS are selling out and having thousands of people laughing manically WITH them).
Yes. It was absolutely necessary. It made the loudest statement in their album. The court (people/antis) did not agree with Jester (BTS), so Jester laughed without being executed (b/c they are too big for them to cancel).
