The OOA serves its members & their patients by advocating for the profession, promoting the importance & access to comprehensive eye care, & provides resources.
It’s simple: Expanding optometry’s scope = better patient care.
When ODs are allowed to provide minor in-office procedures, patients will receive care faster and closer to home.

Access to vision care isn’t just a pediatric issue, as adult eye care gaps remain across Ohio.

We’ve said it before—and we’ll say it again:
146,000+ laser procedures performed by optometrists nationwide with a negative outcome rate of <0.0014%.
Safe. Effective. Comparable to ophthalmologists.
Let’s focus on facts as Ohio considers Senate Bill 36.
https://t.co/c4D2caYLJ7
FACT: Expanding optometry’s scope will improve access to eye care in Ohio.
Opposing claims rely on incomplete data and misleading “% of workforce” metrics that undervalue optometrists.
In states with expanded scope, access has increased as procedure volume grows.
When ODs practice to the full extent of their training, access improves.
After states expanded their scope, OD-performed laser procedures grew 44–45% in year one—and kept rising.
More providers=better patient access.
