Today we read The Invisible Boy by @TrudyLudwig. This picture in particular tore at my heartstrings. Students used oil pastel and watercolor resist to represent their takeaways. Many of us could relate to feeling invisible sometimes.

If we want kids to BE readers we can simply fill our day w/ explicit instruction (as some would like you do). If we want kids to BECOME readers then we must hold tight to increasing volume & choice thru independent reading and embed support w/in those experiences. Your choice!
