Throughout my time in the course BIOG 1500, I have learned several transferable skills, such as how to write a research proposal, how to statistically analyzing data using R Studio, and the various ways to verify the validity of scientific texts #CUinTheLab [1/2]
Experiment: Antibiotic Resistance to Kanamycin and Ampicillin in S. marcescens
Hypothesis: S. marcescens will have a larger zone of inhibition when exposed to kanamycin as opposed to when exposed to ampicillin. #CuinTheLab [1/3]
Methods: A total of 18 plates, 6 plates kanamycin, 6 plates ampicillin, 6 plates with no antibiotics as controls.
Results: The average zone of inhibition for kanamycin was smaller than the average zone of inhibition for ampicillin.

The results of this experiment indicate the potential for negative impacts of unnatural sound on the ecology of #shoaling species that inhabit engineered freshwater environments.
Influence of acoustics on the collective behaviour of a shoaling freshwater fish: Matt Short and others experiment to understand how animals influenced by #anthropogenic activity is important for their conservation in an urbanised world.

Four metrics were calculated 10 min immediately before (control–sound stimulus absent) and during the #acoustic treatment: (1) swimming speed, (2) persistence of swim paths, (3) cohesion of the group, and (4) orientation of group members.
Leginon: New Features and Applications: Author Anchi Cheng and more provide an updated summary of the overall Leginon architecture and an update of the current state of the package. #architecture#CuinTheLab
Scientists involved used instrument controls, written in #python, using an object-relational mapping (ORM) system developed specifically for the project to collect data.
The authors found that spillover occurred and resulted in pathogen-mediated #competition within the community. This proves a relationship between pathogens ang their host communities. [3/3]
In the scientific article, Pathogen Spillover in Disease Epidemics, the authors Allison Power and Charles Mitchell discuss the relationship between host community and the spread of disease among plants and animals in various populations.

The scientists conducted a series of #experiments where they observed different plant communities to determine the significance of virus spillover. [2/3]
