I told people to predict Salah’s next club in March, there were over 700 comments and not one person predicted Trabzonspor. Not one.
So why Trabzonspor? What’s the attraction?
If you’re even going to join the Turkish league, surely, you should join the biggest club in the league, which is obviously Galatasaray or maybe Fenerbache or Besiktas, but Salah chose the team that finished 3rd in the league last season.
Besiktas were actually sure of signing him, in fact, the salary speculated was €15 per year, that is madness, but they said Salah’s agent, Ramy Abbas was making crazy demands. Besiktas also claimed Salah spoke to their technical and sporting director, but his agent had some high requests like ridiculous commissions. You can go to the agent’s page on X to view his tweets on the day the rumours were flying that Besiktas had finalised the deal (his handle is @ ramycol).
Why not Galatasaray?
The wages paid to Victor Osimhen and Sane alone is a crazy wagebill on the club. Galatasaray had to sell their former training ground to clear some bank debts, so they can have resources, or you can call it a capital increase to improve their debt status, more like credit score. If you remember how Napoli were even rejecting bank checks for the sale of Victor? Let’s not go there. The summary is that Galatasaray do not have that space to add Salah to the already-enormous wagebill.
Why not Saudi?
I did an analysis last week or so that Saudi is just 4 teams. Half of the teams in Saudi don’t even average 5k attendance. The 4 teams stand out because of the government funding amidst the losses they keep recording on their balance sheet because the clubs are not self sufficient. In fact, 14 out of the 18 teams in Saudi average about 10k attendance, low merchandise sales, low following, etc.
Salah made it clear he wants to play in a competitive league at least and Europe, we know how competitive he is, hence, Turkey is a better option.
Trabzonspor will be playing Europa League play offs next week or so, and they would most likely qualify, hence, Salah will still play European football in the new season.
Again, why Trabzonspor?
€17 per year salary, guaranteed for two years.
Sign on bonus, rumoured around €5-7m
European football guaranteed (if they lose the Europa league play offs, they’ll play Conference league I guess).
20% of jersey/merchandise sales will go to Salah (speculated).
These perks are very attractive.
Trabzonspor is also ambitious. Don’t forget they won the league in 2022, their player, Onuachu was joint top scorer last season, they also won the Turkish Cup last season. They’re very ambitious.
Onana’s loan has been extended. Their defender, Chibuike Nwaiwu, is one of the most monitored defenders but I don’t think they’re letting him go (An agent asked me about this Nwaiwu guy few months ago by the way, he’s hot on the market). Trabzonspor turned down some premier league teams recently also and now that they’ve signed Salah, it’s less likely they’ll sell him.
Trabzonspor recently signed this Cape Verde boy that scored that banger against Argentina, Cabral. The one that went to kiss his girlfriend after the goal, you remember yeah?😅
They have also signed like 10 players so far, and I’m sure they’ll get more big names especially since Salah has joined.
My submission, this is a good move.
