Africa doesn't need mega-stadiums.For Uganda,10,000-20,000 seater stadiums are the most viable and sustainable in terms of maintenance.
Across the continent, many 40k+ stadiums are now dilapidated due to high maintenance costs.
Let's build what we can sustainably manage.
Attn: UGANDA
Just 11 years ago,Equatorial Guinea hosted AFCON. Today, they donβt have a single CAF-approved stadium.
The Panthers FC just withdrew from the CAF Confederation Cup because playing abroad is too expensive.
Building stadiums means nothing if you don't maintain them.
When completed,Akii-Bua Stadium will be a very MODERN complex.
Having been to 4 AFCON tournaments,my concern is maintenance AFTER the tournament.
Africa builds great stadiums for AFCON.But what happens 1yr later?
That's the test Uganda must pass with Akii-Bua,Hoima & Nambole.
One thing i will always appreciate about Qatar was standard of their stadiums during the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Their excellence in infrastructure, organization,& hospitality was perfect.
We hope Uganda can draw valuable lessons in stadium maintenance & hosting major tournaments.
After 13 years,77 caps & 3 AFCON appearances,Khalid Aucho hangs up his Cranes boots.
A leader on the pitch,a warrior in midfield,& a proud servant of Ugandan football.
He gave us tackles, commitment & captaincy with a smile.
The engine room will not be the same without you.
Thanks
At present, most stewards claim to be Football Safety and Security Officers, yet they just underwent basic stewarding training, which is totally incorrect.
Dixon Okello,
*CAF Safety and security officer/ trainer
*Sport safety and security specialist
Attn: Ugandan Football Clubs.
Bouncers are not trained Football stewards. They are totally incompetent to handle high stake Matches.
Football violence in the Uganda Premier League will continue unless clubs organise regular refresher training for their safety and security teams.
As we speak, only the stewards from HAMZ Stadium,Nakivubo, receive regular training. They are well-facilitated and deliver top-notch stewarding during matches.
In addition, stewards are supposed to be graded β Level 1, Level 2,and Supervisors at Level 3.
You have to love what you do and always remain professional and strict when it comes to sports safety and security.
Only then will you earn the trust of competent National Federations, players, ex-internationals, officials, and fans.

The biggest weakness of most Football Federations & security officers is not knowing the strengths & weaknesses of their own security team.
I've handled several international matches & never take chances. Drills, real-life simulations & proper deployment are a must.
Great events begin with great preparation.
Behind every successful match is a disciplined team committed to safety, coordination,& operational excellence.
Was appointed as CAF safety & security officer for the match between Ethiopia and senegal in Ethiopia.
