I almost fought a bus conductor yesterday. This was the closest ever in my life.

I was nose to nose in front of him. I had planned my fight—an elbow strike to his jaw followed by a roundhouse kick to his liver.

At worst, he staggers. At best, he collapses, after which I pounce.

Of course, he was threatening with words and saying all sorts of things. I was visibly angry and preparing for a fight.

He ought to have given me my change, but he was denying me and being arrogant about it. What stopped me from fighting?

I kept hearing 2 Timothy 2:24 in my heart:

“And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient.” – 2 Timothy 2:24

Followed by Colossians 3:8:

“But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth.” – Colossians 3:8

These verses kept ringing and ringing. They restrained me completely. The guy kept making more threats when he saw me retreating.

This angered me even more, because—me? Lekan?

But the Word of God is above my ego. Peter said, sanctify the Lord in your heart. What the Word said was the only thing that mattered.

Why am I sharing this? It is because I wanted to explain what Paul meant by live by the Spirit and you will not fulfill the lust of the flesh.

This is an example of what it means to live by the Spirit. It means picking the choice of the Spirit at every crucial decision-making point in life.

In marital and sexual relations.
In money and career situations.
In times of trouble and tribulations.
In needing to defend your pride and ego.
In every way possible.

Choose the Spirit. What that does is energize your spirit to help you say “yes” to God even more.

This is how you mortify the flesh—by saying “no” to it with the help of grace. What will it be? Would you choose the gratification of your emotions over God’s Word?

Or would you obey God no matter what? Do the latter.
