There is a desperate competition on the highways to worsen hardships for Nigerians as a New Year gift, with various government institutions involved, and the @PoliceNG auditioning for the top spot through its tinted permit enforcement.
All attempts to suggest better ways to administer this have fallen on deaf ears, with the commercial and inhumane approach preferred, one that will soon lead back to the dark days of breakdown of law and order.
Boko Haram and other known terrorist groups don’t use tinted glasses, commercial drivers can’t afford them, and the few who do are struggling poor barely getting by. (As we all know that the convoys of the rich and famous will never be stopped for tinted permit checks). So, aside from the money-making epileptic online registration, this amounts to tacit legalization of extortion on a national scale.
The law is clear on those affected (mainly vehicles with stickers, not factory-fitted tint), but a blanket approach now mandates dragging anyone with tinted glasses to the station for harassment over a violation that only warrants a N2000 fine upon conviction.
IGP Alkali was wiser in his implementation, avoiding misinterpretation by exempting factory-fitted vehicles, but the current dispensation has no regard for the law on this matter. We will observe how things unfold and hope the police leadership realizes this is the time to win public trust, not bleed it for the love of money. Those pressuring the Police to commercialize the enforcement of laws don’t like our unity and may be leading the Police to another watershed moment. 🚔
