This is the part people miss when they talk about Ronaldo’s “winning mentality.” Winning, to him, has never just meant the trophy. It has to come with the individual recognition attached, or somehow it doesn’t count the same. Look at Euro 2016. Nani finished with identical output, three goals and three assists, playing every bit as important a role in that Portugal run. But the tournament’s individual award went to Griezmann, and Ronaldo still walked away from that summer treating it as entirely his story, his leadership, his tournament, barely a mention of the teammate standing right next to him with the same numbers on the stat sheet.

Then look at what happened with the Nations League. In 2019, Bernardo Silva was named the best player of the tournament, a well-deserved nod to a teammate who had quietly been one of the most important players on that Portugal side for years. Ronaldo’s reaction wasn’t pride in a teammate finally getting his due, it was visible frustration that the spotlight landed somewhere other than on him. Fast forward to 2025, and the same thing plays out again, this time with Nuno Mendes picking up the individual honor. A player who has grown into one of the best fullbacks in the world gets recognized, and once again, the story quietly becomes about Ronaldo’s mood rather than his teammate’s achievement.

That’s the pattern. Real leadership means being the loudest voice cheering for the guy next to you when he gets his moment, not needing every camera pointed back at yourself the second attention drifts elsewhere. Messi has had teammates outshine him individually plenty of times, Iniesta at a World Cup, Modric with a Ballon d’Or, and he’s never once made it about himself in the process. He shares the frame. Ronaldo, even when Portugal wins as a collective, still needs the headline to circle back to him individually, and that need is exactly why teammates over the years have quietly found him difficult to play alongside. Trophies are shared. Egos, apparently, are not.
