RE: THREE WEEKS MID-SEMESTER BREAK; A RECKLESS ESCAPISM FROM ACCOUNTABILITY

The recent directive by the Management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, mandating a three-week mid-semester break under the guise of "unruly conduct" is not only a disappointing abdication of duty but a blatant assault on the fundamental rights of students. As a concerned alumni, i view this sudden closure barely five weeks into a new semester as a cowardly move to silence legitimate grievances rather than addressing the core issues of student welfare.

Protest is a Right, Not a Crime

The students’ agitation against the newly introduced transportation system is a struggle for survival. Instead of engaging in a constructive, bilateral dialogue to find a mutually beneficial arrangement for all stakeholders, the University Senate has chosen the path of least resistance: shutting down the institution. By doing so, the management has effectively criminalized the right to peaceful assembly and dissent, proving they would rather stall academic progress than concede that the students’ concerns are valid.

Disregard for National Security and Student Safety

To order thousands of students to vacate the campus with "immediate effect" in the current Nigerian climate is nothing short of heartless. Nigeria is currently grappling with a severe security crisis, characterized by rampant kidnappings and highway robberies. Forcing students, many of whom reside in distant states across the country, to embark on unplanned journeys on such short notice exposes them to extreme peril.

The Ghost of Unresolved Insecurity

It is deeply ironic that a management so quick to "protect the university community" by shutting it down has remained tight-lipped on more pressing safety issues. To date, a member of this community has been missing for months, yet there has been no substantive report or update from the university on any progress made. This selective concern for "safety" only when students are protesting reveals a management that is more interested in optics and control than the actual lives of its students.

A Direct Warning to the Management

I, as reasonable and concerned alumni, categorically refuse this decision. I hold the Vice-Chancellor and the University Management directly responsible for the safety of every single student forced onto the roads by this impulsive directive. Should any student fall victim to the insecurity plaguing our highways during this forced exodus, the blood of such victims and the legal consequences thereof will rest squarely on the shoulders of the University Administration

We call on the general public, parents, and relevant security agencies to take note of this development. The University exists for the students, not the other way around. It is time the OAU management stops running from its problems and starts leading with empathy and logic.

The OAU Management is at it again, to their usual old format. Shutting down the school and also trying to intimidate the students' leader with suspension as expulsion so they would relent on their position as regards the welfare of whom they serve

I was a student leader in 2021 and when we held protest against the death of a student at the university health centre. This same tactics was used and it's not even new to me. We must at this point learn to resist such action they delve into everytime, these things are what contribute to enlogated academic session and for me I think these actions are deliberate.

The university management don't like their ego trampled on. Hence, they resort in this to protect their names and avoid escalations that would affect their person.

Clearheaded leaders stood still during our time and I must say that I am super impressed today with the students' leaders actions
Also, I must say this that students should be unified now and fight the known oppressor to them, which is the university management.

Let this be on record that if we don't fight, we are losers already and if we fight we might win. The management is doing so many wickedness to the student community lately and people aren't seeing in. How do you explain that 50 buses and 30 tricycles would serve a community of about 35,000 students excluding artisans and staffs that aren't mobile. This is impunity of the highest order

Should we talk about the arbitrary increase in school fee and hostel fee attributing this thing maintenance of those hostels and these maintenance are not even visible. Students will pay feee and not get identity cards, where are these money going to.

This degradation that has been caused to the university community and major sakegolder in the university must be stopped with immediate effect.
This is not a time to implore the university management to correct wrongs, we need to mandate them to do so and that we will do both that alumi and student body.

Students should stand in unity against oppression. Together we will win ♥️

PRESS STATEMENT

PROTESTS : OAU STUDENTS TO GO ON THREE WEEKS MID - SEMESTER BREAK

The Management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, wishes to inform parents, guardians, alumni, and the general public that following recent developments on campus, the Senate of the University has approved that the students proceed on a mid - semester break for a period of three (3) weeks, with immediate effect.

A release by the Public Relations Officer of the University, Abiodun Olarewaju, stated that this decision became necessary after a series of protests by students over the newly introduced transportation system escalated into unruly conduct, including the obstruction of major access roads and harassment of other road users.

Despite efforts to engage and appeal for calm, the situation has continued to pose concerns for the safety and well-being of members of the University community in particular and the public in general.

Consequently, and in the interest of restoring order, ensuring safety and creating an enabling environment for meaningful dialogue, Senate has directed the University Management to ask all students to proceed on a two-week break with immediate effect.

During this period, the University Management will continue to engage relevant stakeholders to address the concerns raised and to ensure that normalcy is restored on campus.

Accordingly, parents and guardians are kindly advised to take note of this development and make the necessary arrangements for their children and wards.

Students are enjoined to remain law-abiding and use this period responsibly.
The University remains committed to the welfare of its students and to maintaining a peaceful and conducive academic environment for all.
