“Apart from seeing the hand of God right from the beginning, the seventh week was the h@rdest for us.
That was when the troops increased their a!r ra!ds. It was intense that at a point, the fear of the b@nd!ts became secondary. We were just praying that m&ss!les would not be acc!d£ntally dropped on us.
But God kept us because we were so exp0s£d, only covered with polythene bags and grasses.
They had told us the previous week that the government said before Friday of the next week, we would be released. So we were calm.
But when the a!r ra!ds started on Tuesday, they became so furious. Towards the end of that week, the commander came and said, ‘Principal, come.’ I was already shaking because I knew what that could mean.
Immediately I got there, he said, ‘See what your government has done. I’m going to k!!l one of you today.’ I just fell down, rolling on the ground. I said, ‘You brought four of my men. There are only two remaining. You still want to take another one?’
I already knew that the l0ss of the other two would continue to haunt me for a long time. I was just rolling on the ground. Unlike him, he became calm. He said they should call me when he was leaving our place.
Later, he said, ‘Now that the government are doing this, what do you want us to do?’ I said, ‘What you asked for is beyond any of the victims’ families. Just ask for what we can run around for.’ He said, ‘Okay, I will send your message.’
I thought that had settled it. Later that night, we started hearing shovels digging. My people, the two of them, were shouting, ‘Mama, they’ve started using shovels. Mama, we can hear the sound of shovels.’
I said, ‘Maybe they are doing some work,’ even though I was crying because we all knew what that meant. They were about to b&ry another person.
But to the glory of God, that night they asked us to move to another place because they could no longer stay in that place.
The leader called me again and said, ‘Mama Principal, tell them we are ready to sacrifice any one of them if they make noise.’ How do you tell a one-year-three-month-old baby not to cry?
How do you tell a two-year-old that they must not ask for food? During that period, they were not free to cook because they were afraid the smoke would expose them. So we went hungry most of the time.
But to the glory of God, we left that camp for the last camp before we were rescued and released. While I was there, apart from praying for God to release us, I specifically asked Him for two things.
First, I prayed that I would not return to an empty house.
I knew how fragile my husband’s health was. At a point, when they told me he had stopped communicating, I said something has happened to him. He wouldn’t have done that on his own.
When we were rescued, I was so persistent that one of the soldiers had to put a call through to him so I could speak with him.
That was when I knew God had answered that prayer. The second thing I specifically prayed for was my health. The place was so terr!bl£ that anything could have happened there.
I just told God, ‘My grave should not be numbered in the forest.’ And God helped me. We were in a place where, if you were shivering with fever, the first question would be, ‘Is it malaria or fever?’
The only solution was two tablets of paracetamol or, at worst, Boska, or whatever they called it. That last week, on Sunday, because of everything I had gone through in the seventh week, I br0ke down completely.
My temperature was on the roof, and I was shivering. I called one of them, the camp commander, and said, ‘Oga, can I have two tablets of paracetamol?’ He said, ‘No problem.’
The woman sitting next to me whispered, ‘Mummy, this is not paracetamol, don’t take it.’ I said, ‘God will work with it.’ I took it, and to the glory of God, it was as if I had never shown any symptoms of malaria.
It was God’s hand. The release was miraculous...”
