@ronmortgageguy I’ve cut down on talking to my boomer father, Ron. The last straw was when he told me that inheriting $1 million wouldn’t change my life. I said “What about buying a house?!” He said I wouldn’t want a house. Does he own a house? Damn right he does.
@JohnPasalis It will take a generation of interest rates not continuously falling (and hence lifting the price of real estate) for people to realize, once again, that housing used to pace inflation and wasn’t something you bought for $5000 and sold 50 years later for $2.5 million.
@Kursk1939@TristinHopper People are down on Canada, but where else can a 71-year-old retired Catholic schoolboard administrator live in a $5 million house and receive $115,000/year indefinitely in retirement?
@StephenPunwasi@TristinHopper 3x the normal cost is just a projection, Stephen. I’m sure, when it’s finished, it’ll be 5x or 10x. Everyone gets a Lear jet and Bentley from this kind of deal.
@RomanFisher__ I sleep well at night knowing that my 96-year-old grandparents who wouldn’t so much as buy their great-children a birthday present are pulling in OAS while chilling in their $2.5 million condo in Forest Hill.
@zerohedge My grandmother was telling me about her friend who’d passed away “too young.” She was 97. When people start thinking 97 is young, everything about retirement has to change.
@jengerson@TristinHopper The old Mid-Life Crisis. When you realize it’s just you against The Abyss. That was always a tough adjustment, but it’s even more difficult now when everywhere you look there’s a 92-year-old man in a rhinestone Taylor Swift tour jacket driving a Maserati.
@texasrunnerDFW Funny, you never hear boomers complain how hard it was a to save a $5000 downpayment. Because it so obviously wasn’t hard. But they all need to claim that, boy, it was tough owning in ‘87. They were really up against it in ‘87.
@TdLeaker I drive around and see houses that have been for sale for 3 years. One after another. No price drops. Just sitting on the market waiting for a miracle.
@MPelletierCIO If AI bumps up longevity by 5 years we enter a scenario where the average millennial inherits money at 70 and Canada becomes a country of self-indulgent nonagenarians driving Porsches. The world has never seen that before. It’s not a pretty picture.
If you’re a young Canadian, shut up, make your CPP contributions, be thankful for your basement apartment, and bow and curtsy when a retired bean salesman and his retired stay-at-home wife drive past you in their BMW. The government says you’re doing just fine.
@VinceGaetano He’s not out of touch with reality, Vince. He’s lying. He’s openly lying and maybe not even having a crisis-of-conscience about it. I guarantee you the PM has told his cabinet that the message he wants out there is that no domestic problem is the predecessor government’s fault.
@DKNExCDN@Tablesalt13 Exactly. It seems like a joke, but it’s not. Their pensions climb faster than the salaries of younger teachers actually working. They’re completely blind to reality, loving Carney because he’s just like them.
