I don't understand why in SH2R James can't attack nor kill Maria. It served as a subtle hint that James is capable of killing someone he loves, and attacking her with the chainsaw made her scream just like the monsters, hinting at her true nature.
Instead, in SH2R James refuses to aim at her, and if the player tries to aim at her she simply complains about the flashlight.
While attacking Maria may appear as a useless mechanic, knowing the full story gives it a whole new meaning, and I wish it wasn't left out of the remake. Perhaps they could have added just a little hint that it crosses James' mind for a moment to hurt Maria.

Maria often appears much closer to James in the save screen than she normally is. I like to think it symbolizes her growing influence on him.
I think it's a really neat detail and I'm surprised I haven't seen any discussions about it...
