In the last 24 hours Russian armed forces launched one of the largest long-range weapons attacks on Ukraine since their full-scale invasion. I deplore the resumption of these large-scale attacks which have resulted in civilian casualties across the country.
Attacks by long-range weapons are one of the leading causes of civilian casualties in Ukraine. Their expanded use in populated areas will only increase the already mounting toll on civilians.
The loss of civilian lives on both sides of the frontline from short-range drone attacks is also unacceptable.
Immediate de-escalation is urgently needed to save lives and halt further suffering – @volker_turk
In the last 24 hours, Russian armed forces launched a record-high number of long-range weapons across Ukraine, according to Ukrainian authorities. We are visiting impact sites to verify reports of civilian casualties.
The massive increase in the use of long-range weapons is one of the main reasons why civilian casualties in the first four months of 2026 were higher than in the same period in any of the last three years. In April, long-range weapons killed at least 84 civilians and injured 628, 43% of total civilian casualties.

More people were killed & injured in Ukraine in Jan-April 2026 than in the same period in any of the past 3 years.

At least 18 civilians were reportedly killed and more than 120 were injured in renewed Russian long-range missile and drone attacks on multiple cities across Ukraine that started on Wednesday evening and continued through the night. The attack struck Odesa, Dnipro, Kharkiv, and Kyiv, some of Ukraine largest cities.
Our team visited several impact sites in Kyiv, including one where a 12-year-old boy was killed in an overnight attack and talked to witnesses and victims. In total, the attack killed at least four civilians and injured 62, including four children, in the capital, according to local authorities.
In Odesa, one of the injured told us about a young couple - a 19-year-old woman and a 21-year-old man - who were killed in an early morning strike that damaged a residential building. They were among 9 people killed in the evening and overnight attacks on the city, according to local authorities.
This latest barrage is one of the deadliest single waves of attacks in recent weeks, bringing April’s verified civilian casualties so far to at least 91 killed and hundreds injured. The high number of civilian casualties in April follows a sharp rise in civilian deaths and injuries in March.

Last night, Russian armed forces attacked several Ukrainian cities, once again targeting energy infrastructure.
Our team visited several locations in Odesa struck during a massive loitering munitions attack to document its impact on civilians. The attack damaged an energy facility, multiple residential buildings, private houses, and a kindergarten. At least 3 civilians were killed and dozens, including children, were injured according to local authorities.
Overnight attacks also hit several other cities and villages. An energy facility in Kharkiv City was severely damaged. The local authorities said up to 80% of the city lost electricity, and four civilians were reportedly injured.
UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk said he was outraged by continued large-scale attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure: “I call on the Russian authorities to immediately cease these attacks. It is appalling to see civilians suffering in this way.”
