“The Scientist” was written by Chris Martin after a difficult period in his relationship, and he has said the song came together very quickly once he found the right piano motif. Directed by Jamie Thraves, the video became famous for being filmed in reverse, with the band having to learn parts of the performance backwards to create its haunting, cinematic effect.
Released as a single in 2002, the song became one of Coldplay’s biggest European hits and remains one of the band’s signature ballads.
