Gosh the way some people talk you’d imagine that doing some BTECs means you no longer take any traditional academic subjects at all … rather than the mix changing .. and that nobody ever progressed from FE to university. Some folk need to spend more time in FE to meet learners thriving there - including those blocked from attending their own school sixth forms for selection reasons.

But there are a number of major problems. One is the dumb rhetoric. No there will not be 'parity of esteem'. That doesn't exist anywhere in Europe. Secondly, the 'hard hat' stuff ties this in with nonsense ideas of 're-industrialisation'. This will not happen.

I get that, but some caveats: firstly, while standards in England overall have improved a lot, this isn't the case for vocational education, which is pretty bad compared to many countries in Europe. This is unhelpful to those pupils who do not flourish in an academic environment.

@dnleslie For schools for children with learning disabilities — not difficulties — the aim of learning should be, in the main, transfer. If it (the learning) isn't going to be used in the home, the local sports centre, the bus, the disco, the café, shared spaces, it's just policy fluff.
