They were saying things that were considered controversial at the time and lost career opportunities & a huge portion of their fan bases. It took balls, and refusing to apologize after the backlash did too.

After a decade or more of this nonsense, I can’t believe we’re STILL expected to applaud celebrities for saying the most widely accepted and politically correct opinions at every single award show. Just completely meaningless.
