I’ve been getting these sorts of comments since 2-3 days due to the Salako issue and I’ve refrained from speaking publicly on it for almost 2 months so as not to take attention off what really matters. The PO Presidency.

I also had to take a quick vacation to America to cool my head.

Now that we are talking about it, I will give a short narration of things that transpired

When news of this substitution started filtering in due to entrants of newly defected APC strongmen in Delta state (You know them), I had to run to H.E Peter Obi late at night to brief him on what and what was going on. The narrative from the new entrants was I lost primaries to justify the substitution. The returning officer wrote a result to favour the said person. I just assumed the right thing was done. That was the legality used by the powers that be in Delta North.

I am not asking for free ticket. All i wanted was the rightful winner being declared as winner.

PO was deeply concerned about all that and stressed that I had to communicate problems “as e dey hot”.

After much deliberation on the way forward and fatherly counsel from PO in the presence of Dr. Tanko, Dr. Mo, Mama Pee, Peter Akah, Esther, Ibrahim, etc, I decided not to pursue my own election matter any longer out of respect for our Principal HE Peter Obi and the journey ahead.

I am not desperate to answer “Honorable” but I’m desperate to see a Nigeria that works for me, you and all our loved ones. Nigeria must work in my lifetime. It’s long overdue.

We will be focused on the NDC Presidential candidate.

I have also spoken to my supporters in Onicha-Ugbo, Ukwu-Nzu, Issele-Azagba, Issele-Ukwu, Obior, Obomkpa, Onicha-Olona, Idumju-Unor and Ezi to keep calm.

I will also do a thank-you tour to my constituents to thank all of them for their support. They are heartbroken but I need to encourage them at this difficult period.

I want to specially appreciate Peter Akah and Caleb Garuba. They had to follow me at the dead of the night, bumper to bumper on this case. They were everywhere with me lobbying on this issue.

What this moment requires is honesty. And the truth is this: an election in which thousands of eligible, willing, determined voters were prevented from casting their ballots by a platform that was not fit for purpose cannot, in good conscience, be treated as though it produced the unimpeachable will of the profession. The administrative collapse was too deep, too widespread, and too well-documented to be papered over with a result.

Today is bigger than any one candidate.

Throughout the ongoing NBA elections, I have received reports from lawyers across the country who say they have been unable to cast their votes due to challenges with the voting process. Regrettably, I have also been unable to cast my own vote despite repeated attempts. We have records showing that the system allows people to vote twice, when it should be one member one vote.

Every eligible member of our Association deserves the opportunity to participate in a free, fair, transparent, and credible election. The integrity of our democratic process must inspire confidence in every voter.

To everyone who believes in this vision, I urge you: do not give up. Continue trying to exercise your right to vote for as long as the voting window remains open.

Leadership is tested most in difficult moments. Let us remain peaceful, resolute, and committed to protecting the credibility of our Association.

As the Nigerian Bar Association's Presidential election approaches, I have made my position clear: the NBA does not have an idea problem. It has an implementation problem.

The issue with the NBA has never been a lack of ideas but a lack of will to implement them. I offer that will and, unlike most candidates, I can point to what I have already delivered when given a mandate.

As Chairman of the NBA Lagos Branch from 2019 to 2021, I convened the Remuneration Committee whose recommendations were adopted nationally and became the 2023 Legal Practitioners Remuneration Order, now subsidiary legislation under the Legal Practitioners Act. My administration also raised approximately ₦15 million in COVID-19 welfare palliatives for members, secured a health insurance partnership with Hygeia for branch members, and covered 50 per cent of CIArb certification fees for 100 lawyers.

My manifesto, ‘Elevate the Bar: A Modern NBA That Works for Every Lawyer’, is built on practical, implementable reforms. It proposes NBA One, a unified digital platform that brings every fragmented NBA service together, and an e-Remuneration Platform to make the existing Remuneration Order enforceable in the daily workflow of every practising lawyer.

This election is about more than promises. It is about proven capacity, credible leadership, and the will to deliver.

Our elders say, "A golden fish has no hiding place." They also remind us that, "A tree with deep roots fears no storm," and that, "The child who knows the way leads others home." These timeless sayings remind us that leadership is earned through character, preparation, and service.

This election is about more than choosing a President. It is about choosing the direction of our profession.

Over the course of this campaign, I have listened. I have engaged. I have reflected. I have travelled across our branches, met colleagues from every sphere of practice, and heard your hopes, your concerns, and your expectations for the Nigerian Bar Association.

I have never asked you to support me because of my name or my record alone. I have asked you to examine my vision, scrutinise my ideas, and judge me by the clarity of my plans and the sincerity of my commitment to serve.

I believe our Bar deserves leadership that unites rather than divides, inspires rather than merely impresses, and serves rather than seeks to be served. It deserves leadership that earns trust, protects the dignity of our profession, and leaves an enduring legacy for generations yet to come.

When history looks back on this defining moment, I hope it will record that we chose competence over convenience, vision over sentiment, and service over self-interest.

The future of our Association will not be determined by chance. It will be shaped by the choices we make together.

Distinguished Colleagues,

For far too many members of this Association, the annual payment of the Bar Practising Fee has been an exercise in institutional obligation without a corresponding experience of institutional value. The question that too many lawyers ask but rarely say aloud is: what, precisely, does my BPF get me?

Under an LOA presidency, that question has twelve specific answers.

One: Free digital stamp and seal for all members on payment of the BPF, with permanent migration to a secure digital imprint stamp that eliminates the logistical failures of the current physical distribution system.

Two: Free access to Law Pavilion, the New Weekly Law Reports, and electronic law reports for all lawyers of zero to ten years at the Bar, removing a significant recurring cost of practice from the members who can least absorb it.

Three: Reactivation of the N1.5 billion single-digit interest rate loan scheme, with improved accessibility, clearer eligibility criteria, and an Islamic finance option for members who require non-interest arrangements.

Four: Increase in the NBA life insurance payout from N2 million to N4 million in the event of death or complete incapacitation, with corresponding upward reviews for terminal illness and partial incapacitation.

Five: Free qualitative training through the NBA-ICLE, with at least seven CPD hours available free to young lawyers every month.

Six: A comprehensive NBA member application, NBA One, modelled on the International Bar Association's member platform, through which every member can interface with the Secretariat and conduct all NBA activities.

Seven: Free NBA Journal for all financial members on payment of the BPF.

Eight: A health insurance scheme open to all members, with twenty members per branch covered at no cost each year and a minimum additional health fund investment of N20 million.

Nine: Free Annual General Conference attendance for members who are seventy years and above, excluding Senior Advocates of Nigeria.

Ten: A twenty per cent reduction in conference fees for young lawyers.

Eleven: A national mentorship scheme for young lawyers, structured across three tracks: one-to-one mentorship pairing, group and speed mentorship, and the Law Firm Mentorship Initiative providing institutional guidance between established firms and start-up practices.

Twelve: Five per cent of the NBA's annual income set aside for career development, scholarships, and sponsorships specifically targeting young lawyers.

Each of these commitments is drawn directly from the published LOA manifesto. Each has a delivery mechanism. Each has a funding basis. None of them are new ideas that appeared only in election season. They are the coherent welfare programme of a candidate who understands what NBA membership should feel like.

Membership in the NBA should not feel like a tax. Under LOA, it will feel like belonging to an institution that is genuinely working for you.

I was in church once and the boy next to me, about 9 or 10, was just absolutely out of control. Single mom couldn't control him.

The boy was loud, interrupting the service, insulting to his mother, and absolutely refused to obey her gentle pleading.

He kept rolling around on the floor and knocking into me. I didn't say anything, but I was growing increasingly annoyed. We were in the back and this kid was damn near throwing a tantrum, just refusing to sit in his chair and instead laying underneath his seat, clinging to its legs while kicking.

Eventually, a father carrying his infant daughter was trying to walk through the aisle and the boy wouldn't move.

At that point, I had had enough. I yanked the chair off of the boy, set it down to the side, stared straight into his eyes, and gave him a direct order: "Stand up right now, get out of the aisle, and listen to your mother."

Kid was stunned. You could tell no one had ever spoken to him with that kind of directness and authority. He immediately obeyed without making a peep. Kept quiet for the rest of the service, too.

This is why discipline is important. The son had zero fear or respect of his mother. That's why he was acting like a brat in public to the detriment of everyone around him.

A few good spankings from a father would have put paid to that nonsense and brought happiness of the boy, his mother, and society at large.

Gentle parenting only works if there is a strong foundation of authority and respect from child to parent.
