This is a really interesting topic. It’s crazy how post-independence Ibadan (and Abeokuta) used to be the entertainment hub of the Southwest. How Ibadan fell off in the entertainment market needs to be studied in music business courses.

experience. I lived in Ijebu Ode for two years, and trust me, they would never treat Ogun State creatives like that.
That said, we creatives are also to blame. Zero branding, no professional structure… just vibes and Inshallah. It’s a broken system.

Why Lagos creatives are treated better than Ìbàdàn creatives.
I have been seeing different posts from Ìbàdàn creatives about how they were allegedly treated badly at the Goldberg's yesterday event. ALL the posts I have seen mentioned the same thing - some INVITED Ìbàdàn creatives couldn't even enter. They were not given refreshments, not even water. They were not given recognition of any sort. On the other hand, all the posts I've seen mentioned that the invited Lagos creatives were "treated like VIPs"
Our Yorùbá elders have a proverb. Òògùn táà bá fowó ṣe, ẹ̀yìn àrò níí gbé. It means a medicine that one gets for free most often gets forgotten at the corner. The first mistake that most Ìbàdàn creatives make is treating their brand like a hobby, instead of business. Lagos creatives are not like that. Even the upcoming ones do not neglect the business aspect of being a creative.
I was invited to the same Goldberg event. I expected them to ask for my rate card but they didn't. I then asked the person who sent my invite about the honorarium package. She said they didn't have. That's why you didn't see me there. The fact that a business and profit making brand like Goldberg can invite you without any horarium package is insulting enough. The fact that you agreed to go adds to that insult. If they had paid you, they would have created "space" for you as they would want to get value for their money.
Not all invites would come with money. There are events of "we-we" that you will attend in order to support ourselves. There are also some that will be VERY GOOD for your portfolio. There's nothing wrong with doing those for (almost) free. But big businesses shouldn't get your services for free. They're making money and they NEED your presence and service. They wouldn't reach out to you if you were not needed. Stop selling yourselves short to these brands. Whether you create from Ìbàdàn, Lagos, London or Addis Ababa, as long as we both serve the same Nigerian audience, we should get similar treatments.
Finally, if a brand keeps getting your services for free, they most likely will associate your brand with FREE. When paid opportunities come, they would go for those they will pay. It's all about perceived value.
Ibadan talent is mind-blowing. Recently, a major corporate gig did a show at the Polo Club, reached out to me and couldn't even outline proper benefits for creatives. Back in 2023, I hosted a Nigerian brewery-sponsored show in Ibadan and it was hands down the worst… 4/
Being an independent artist is way tougher than it looks! The hustle to make up for that missing label support is real; it's a ton of work. Big respect to every artist grinding through that uphill climb! Keep pushing; it’ll all be worth it!

The spiritual community pushes this narrative of "love n light" so strongly n neglect to explain that you must enter the darkness to reach that love n light. If you're not acknowledging these "negative" parts, your practice is surface level.
