A new @nberpubs study by @pierre_azoulay & Wesley Greenblatt finds that NIH grants with high-risk projects—those with disruptive outcomes, novel pivots, or unconventional approaches—are renewed at significantly lower rates.

The "risk penalty" hits hardest for junior researchers and cutting-edge fields, raising concerns that peer review may be stifling the very breakthroughs it is meant to support.
