I spent over 5 hours with this highly respected man yesterday at his house. It’s been long we had our long talks because life got busier for me. Baba is over 85 years old now, he doesn’t take his evening strolls everyday like he used to.

On Friday on his way back from Jumat, he stopped at the gate and asked of me, I wasn’t around at the time. So I had to take time to see him. I learnt a great lot as always.

Yesterday, I prayed Salatul Isha at the University of Ibadan (UI) Masjid. It seemed they had just concluded a programme, and someone announced that vehicles were readily available to convey sisters who had come from far places.

He then added, "As for the brothers, as usual."

I was curious about what "as usual" meant, so I made an inquiry. I discovered that it meant there was no special provision for the brothers—they were simply expected to make their own arrangements. And as usual, there was no noise, no objection, and no protest.

Yet, some people continue to push the narrative that women are maltreated in Islam.

The reality is that Islam places responsibilities on both men and women and recognizes their different needs and circumstances. Fairness does not always mean treating everyone in exactly the same way; rather, it means giving each person what is appropriate and just.

May Allah grant us the wisdom to understand Islam from its authentic sources and not through stereotypes or misconceptions.
